Team contests are where your merits earned come in. Teammates come together to donate their merits towards their merit balance to compete in the monthly/weekly team competitions to win a cash reward. You can view the current running contests by going to the Compete tab and click Contests . Keep in mind that any merits you donate go only towards the open contests and do not go by the overall merits donated as a team. You will need to make sure if you're going into a contest that your team will have enough merits to actually win a contest - so you do not waste your merits. A pretty good amount for a competition is a few thousand merits per teammate. You can earn more merits by completing quests, earning them from the Spin2win wheel after you've completed an offer, and by logging in each do you earn one merit.
