Merits are used in team competitions. Winning teams earn cash. Hover over the compete tab, click team competitions and you can choose a team or make your own ( I recommend you save a few thousand first ). Hope this helps.)

Anyone can create/join a team to compete in competitions. You will want to save up enough merits to win with though. Donated merits only count towards the current running competitions, so if you donate with very few merits those would just go to waste.
