You will want to save up your merits so you don't waste them. Merits you donate to the team only go towards the current open contests. If you don't have enough to win with, you will waste them. Save up a few thousand per teammate to have a good amount of merits.

To donate, go to the Account tab, Teams competition and click Your team.
You will be able to donate your merits there.
