ok so im like totally lost when it comes to iphones and computers and stuff. my thing is this my tv has a usb port to which if i want to watch a movie i can go put a flash drive into my computer, copy the movie to my flash and then plug the flash back into my tv use the soursce button and goto usb then play my movie through the tv Im well chuffed just knowing how to do this bit, but i want to go further i have lots of dvds and want to tidy them up i was thinking if i got a external usb drive could i load all my movies and more onto it and then use it as a kind of video library for my tv eg i just keep that external drive plugged into my tv through a usb cable. I have been told by my good friend lac that it needs to be plug and play compatible but im unsure on how to find this out, another question was is a usb able to work in both directions eg input as well as out put i was looking at this one usb 1 uk viewersa only im affraid but was unsure how it is kept alive or charged up as it were my second choice was external hard drive choice 2 another theory was my tv is not internet connected but if i bought a wi-fi connection stick and stuck it into my tv could it create a kind of link to my computer upstairs so i can access files on my computer up stairs on my tv downstairs. i have loads of space on my comp 4tb but hate having to run up and down stairs loading on and off the flash drive |

Have you also thought of getting a nettop PC to plug-in behind or beside your telly? eBuyer had a really lovely one going for about £109, but they sold out in a matter of days. My television was a cheap one, and even though I could plug-in a USB drive to play some films or TV from, their menu design was horrible, and it could only display the first seven or so pages of films, without a search or sort option to get to a film I want. My solution? Nettop. Install an operating system, stick on a media centre, like Windows, or XBMC, get a metadata downloader to grab poster artwork, backdrops or DVD covers, and then customise to your heart's content with skins and designs. Added benefit is that since it's a computer, you could hook it up via ethernet or (built in) Wi-Fi to either play movies over your network, or connect to the internet and browse on the big screen, as I doubt most televisions would support off-the-shelf, generic plug-and-play Wifi adapters. USB ports for added external drives if you use up the net-top's drive and don't fancy opening it up to upgrade. There was even an iPad app that let you use your iPad as a mouse and keyboard via Bluetooth, to save space (and batteries) on having wireless mice or keyboards lingering about. |
